Tuscany
Few families are more closely tied to the history of Chianti Classico than the Ricasoli Firidolfi family. In 1872, Baron Bettino Ricasoli established the original formula for Chianti, helping define the region’s wines for generations to come. His descendant Marco Ricasoli Firidolfi established Rocca di Montegrossi in 1981 near Monti in Chianti, just south of Gaiole, and has developed it into one of the area’s most consistent producers.
The estate encompasses 100 hectares, including 20 hectares of vineyards, with the remainder devoted to olive groves and woodland. The vineyards sit between 340 and 510 meters above sea level, with south and southeast exposures and soils composed of alberese limestone, galestro, and clay. Rocca di Montegrossi began converting to organic farming in 2006 and has been certified organic since 2010.
The 2022 Chianti Classico is a blend of 93% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, and 2% Colorino, harvested by hand from vines averaging between 10 and 25 years old. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in lined cement tanks. The wine then spends ten months in cement, followed by six months in large French Allier oak vats, which adds texture and polish without obscuring the fruit.
The wine shows tart cherry, raspberry, violet, dried herbs, and black pepper. Medium bodied and energetic, it has bright acidity, fine savory tannins, and a long, mineral finish. This is classic Chianti Classico, with enough structure to age but plenty of freshness and charm for drinking now. Try it with porcini risotto.
